Team Manitoba at 2018 CPU Western Canadian Championships
By Mark Oxer, Team Manitoba Head Coach
The 2018 Westerns in Edmonton Alberta; were the largest non-national event in Western Canadian history with over 260 lifters competing. There were two platforms with multiple sessions per day. Manitoba sent a team of 18 lifters to the event. The three day event had lifters from Manitoba lifting on each of the three days.
Friday was the busiest day at the event for Team Manitoba with 13 of our lifters participating; Friday morning the Juniors and Subjuniors participated in 3 lift and Friday afternoon/evening (after a bit of a delayed start) saw all of the bench only athletes lift. Saturday was the busiest day at the event as a whole as it was both male and female open lifters competing in 3 lift; Manitoba had 4 lifters competing on Saturday, 3 in the morning session and 1 in the afternoon. Sunday was the quietest day at the competition but still saw a lot of great lifting, Sunday was the day the Masters lifters competed in 3 lift; Manitoba had two lifters participating.

2018 Movement Powerlifting Classic Meet Report
By Alyssa Amanda Burg (Meet Director)
It has been over a week since the meet has concluded and as always here is the post-meet report.
I first and foremost would like to thank the owners of Movement for allowing the MPA to run a meet out of their gym. The venue was an appropriate size for our 37 lifters, 6 officials, and numerous volunteers and spectators. Thank you Movement!
Just like every meet on this planet, it could not be possible without our volunteers. Huge shout out to the MPA volunteer coordinator Jannelle Van Den Bosch for gathering volunteers for the set-up and day of the meet.
Our set-up crew consisted of:
Cody Dietrich (Co-owner of Movement)
Chris Cadiz (Co-owner of Movement)

A Brief Backstory: I had been looking for a place to train in Selkirk after finding out that “The Gym” had closed last spring (RIP). Well, as luck would have it I stumbled upon an Open House advertisement for Iron Image last November. They were a brand new gym, and I could tell from photos they had bought out some equipment from the recently closed “The Gym”. I went and checked it out on work break one day. What I stumbled into was this massive, former warehouse, with a wicked amount of space (for activities!), with significantly less mold and rain water buckets than “The Gym” had. As MPA President – and a man forever fighting the good fight against “Perimiteritis” – my first thought was, “Meet?!”. Co-owners Matt Evans Sr. and Tom Pachal, men with goals of hypertrophy for their gym and fitness in general, were immediately interested. I spoke with Susan shortly thereafter and stated to her “…Provincials?!” She and Brock visited the venue and met the co-owners as well. Turns out that co-owner, Tom Pachal, had been strength training lately and was interested in competing in powerlifting. He took the CPU Coaching Certification workshop last year and would go on to qualify for Provincials at the Brickhouse Power Challenge. One thing led to another and we set a date. June 23rd: 2018 MPA Provincial Championships.
We would like to thank Steeltown Ford, 204 Skate Shop, Stanley Electric, Sunova Credit Union, realtor Brad Hirst, Innerstrength Products, Titan Canada, Muscletech, and Rivaluis for sponsoring this event. The Haywoods and I were in Calgary at the IPF Classic World Championships earlier in the month, which left us otherwise occupied in the lead-up to this event. Tom and Matt answered the call, stepped up for preparations, and found some terrific sponsors to help feed our volunteers, donate prize packs, and support Powerlifting in Selkirk. Thank you to Iron Image and all of its sponsors!

MPA Provincials Best Club Award Formula
- For the 2018 Provincials, we have 5 MPA Clubs registered and vying for the inaugural “Best MPA Club” award:
- Starke Powerlifting
- Brickhouse Barbell Club
- Iron Image
- The Power Moves
- Team Wild Wind
The Formula is as follows:
- For each event category (i.e. Classic PL, Classic BP, Equipped PL, Equipped BP), the Top 5 Highest Wilks Coefficient Scores will be utilized.
- The sum of these scores will then be multiplied by the percent of total eligible lists scores.
- Example: If there were 48 Total Eligible Scores, made up of 10 Equipped PL, 15 Classic PL, 25 Classic PL, 8 Equipped BP eligible top 5 Wilks scores, the formula may look as follows for a team that entered 5 lifters in each category:
- (top 5 Equipped PL Scores Sum) x (10/48) + (Top 5 Raw PL Scores Sum) x (15/48) + (Top 5 Classic BP Scores Sum) x (25/38) + (Top 5 Equipped BP Scores Sum) x (8/48)
Good Luck to everyone!
