The MPA’s fist Benchpress single lift meet is in the books. It was held at Starke Fitness which turned out to be a great venue! In usual Manitoba fashion our MPA volunteers stepped up. We had more than enough volunteers to unload and set up the platform in 30 minutes! What a crew!
There were eleven (11) competitors and three of them were competing for the first time. Zena Van Rooyen was back after starting her family and did her self proud with a 60 kg Bench! Our own MPA Referee Chair, Janet Loesel Sitar managed to go 1/3 but this was good enough for the Best Female Benchpresser with a 75 kg Bench. Last but not least was Susan Haywood who was in the “Gear” and finally managed to touch the bar to her chest. She managed a 62.5 kg Bench which was a new Provincial Record and an Unofficial Canadian Record for an Equipped Woman of the tender age of 70 years old!
The men were awesome too! Dean Smith went 3/3 finishing with 142.5 kg in a dry run for the Nationals this March in Ottawa. David Hrynkow also was testing his strength for the Nationals and pressed 95 kg. Adam Salsi in his very first meet went 3/3 and pressed a new Men’s Junior 74 kg record of 148 kg!! Gordon Klassen decided to come out and give himself a Birthday Present by competing in his first ever competition on the day he turned 60 (M3 age category). Gordon was successful with 107.5 kg. Mark McPhee was the third first timer who had been challenged to compete by our President Mathew Bowen. Mark also went 3/3 and pressed 162.5 in the Classic division. What a Beast! Mark Oxer, co-meet director and trainer at Starke Fitness managed 110 kg on the day despite smashing his finger only recently. Former MPA President Brock Haywood who also lifted in a Benchpress Shirt was unsuccessful with all three attempts at 137.5 kg. It was just too much this day.
We would like to express our gratitude to Starke Strength and Conditioning owner Paul Dyck for hosting this meet in his facility. There was plenty of room and the set up was great! The MPA would also like to thank Mark Oxer for securing the prizes for the lifters.
Our sponsor Tydax provided each of our lifters with prizes including elbow sleeves, water bottles, caps, and kilo plate coasters!
Also, any meet cannot be successful without the volunteers. Our MPA Refs were Mathew Bowen, Krista Sanger, Amanda Burg, Thea Olalea and Jorrel Marasigan. At the Head Table we had Lexie Elias and her daughter along with Audrey Mifflin with Randy doing the speaker duties. The spotters and loaders worked well keeping the lifters safe and moving the competition along. Thank you again and we will see you at the next meet at the Brickhouse Gym on February 2/19.
